TITLE:            OUTSTANDING FACULTY OF THE YEAR AWARD

 

1.0       DIMENSIONS

 

1.1 Purpose

 

The purpose of the "Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award" is to publicly honor those ranked faculty members of Palmer College Davenport who exemplify high standards and qualities of educational excellence, scholarly pursuit, attributed by students and faculty alike.  Recipients of this award should have evidenced a significant contribution to the Palmer Community, possessing the ability to further inspire faculty collegiality and leadership.

 

1.2 Administration

 

The award is bestowed by the Office of the President of the College and shall be administered by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

 

1.3 Honor

 

One full-time ranked faculty member may be honored each year.

 

 

2.0  QUALIFICATIONS

 

2.1 Eligibility

 

The candidate must have served as a full-time ranked faculty member at the Davenport campus for at least 24 consecutive months prior to the nomination deadline.

 

2.2 Rank

 

The candidate must be a ranked faculty member holding the rank of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor.

 

2.3 Previous Honors

 

The candidate may have been previously honored; however, a ranked faculty member may not receive the award for two consecutive years.


 

3.0  EVALUATION GUIDELINES

 

The following components of the "Faculty Personnel Performance" evaluation for Rank Promotion shall be used as evaluation guidelines:

 

            3.1 Nominations

Nominations must be completed by the date specified each year and must be submitted to the Chair of the Faculty Achievement Committee.

(See Appendix I)

 

3.2 Faculty Personnel Performance Review

 

Faculty Personnel Performance Guidelines (Appendix II) shall be used in determining a ranked faculty member's suitability for this honor.

 

3.3 Involvement of Candidate

           

            Candidates should be actively involved in all three aspects of ranked faculty work – primary assignment, research activities, and professional/service activities.

 

 

4.0       SELECTION PROCESS

 

These are the steps that must be followed in determining the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award.

 

4.1 Nominations

 

Nominations may be submitted by any employee of PCC Davenport.  Ranked faculty may not self-nominate.  Nominations must be submitted according to the guidelines in Appendix I.

 

4.2 Call for Nominations

 

The Faculty Achievement Committee shall communicate to all constituencies, via written and verbal announcement, the "Call for Nominations," the guidelines for nominations, and the deadline for submitting those nominations

 

4.3 Nomination Due Date

 

Nominations shall be due in the Office of the Chair of the Faculty Achievement Committee by a date designated each year by the Faculty Achievement Committee.


 

            4.4 Initial Review

 

            The Faculty Achievement Committee will perform an initial review of nominations for completeness.  All complete nominations will be forwarded to the Chair of the Award Committee.  Incomplete nominations will be returned to the nominator and will not be considered.

 

4.5 Award Committee

 

Nominations will be referred to the Ad Hoc Faculty of the Year Award Committee for review.

 

4.51 Membership

 

The Ad Hoc Faculty of the Year Award Committee shall be appointed each year with the following composition:

 

1) Committee Chairman (non-voting) -Appointed by the Faculty Achievement Committee

2) The Faculty Senate President or his/her designate.

3) Five ranked faculty members appointed by the Faculty Senate and agreed to by the Vice President for Academic Affairs. As much as possible, each ranked faculty area should be represented – Classroom, Clinic, Research, and Academic Support.

4) The Vice President for Academic Affairs or his/her designate.

 

Members of the Ad Hoc Faculty of the Year Award Committee shall not include anyone nominated for the award, any nominee’s spouse or significant other nor anyone who has submitted a nomination.

 

4.52 Review Meeting/Interviews

 

Upon receipt of the nominations, the Award Selection Committee will meet to review candidate submissions.  The Selection Committee will determine the top three candidates and will conduct personal interviews of each of these individuals.

 

            4.6 Submission to the President of the College

 

The name of the Award Candidate shall be given to the President of the College by the Chair of the Faculty Achievement Committee as expeditiously as possible in consideration of the timeliness of the Award announcement.

 


 

5.0  AWARD

 

The OUTSTANDING FACULTY OF THE YEAR AWARD shall consist of a commemorative plaque and an honorarium of $1000.

 

5.1 Plaque

 

A plaque, bearing the following inscription, shall be presented to the outstanding Faculty of the Year:

 

PALMER COLLEGE OF CHIROPRACTIC

 

In recognition of the high standards of quality you have demonstrated by your teaching, research, and collegial contribution toward Palmer College of Chiropractic Faculty and Students, I hereby declare,                                                        Outstanding Faculty of the Year                   .

 

The plaque will also bear the signatures of the College President and the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

APPENDIX  II

 

PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES

 

The following guidelines are suggestions only and are not meant to be definitive:

 

 

Professional Assignment: Elements contributing to overall teaching/ service performance are: Clear identification of assignment needs and development of curriculum, plans assignment outlines to meet those needs; Incorporation of new knowledge and teaching/services techniques into organized assignments, laboratories, practicums, seminars, etc.; Effective presentation of subject matter through lectures, discussions, valid examinations, etc.; Motivation of students and establishment of rapport with students resulting in enhancement of the learning process; Attention to responsibilities,. such as meeting assignments promptly, maintaining office hours, filling out reports, complying with requirements for reports, etc.; Professional growth and scholarly achievements as evidenced by experience, educational attainments, commitment to reading and study, productive scholarship, and professional contributions beyond the scope of regular duties.

 

 

Research: Elements contributing to and a hallmark of good scholarship/research performance are: Identification of problems; development of a comprehensive view of what has been done with the problem; development of a hypotheses directed -toward the problem solution; identification of specific research projects contributing to priority research needs either in the basic sciences or the clinical sciences in the theoretical or applied fields; development of sound research proposals culminating in support funding; executive of the research program/project in a sound research and reporting of the findings in appropriate publications and/or at professional meetings; attention to responsibilities such as providing timely reports; supervision of technicians/paraprofessional assistants, and development of research facilities and environment; professional growth and scholarly achievements as evidenced by experience, educational attainments, commitment to reading and study, productive scholarship, and professional contributions beyond the scope of regular duties.

 

 

Service: Elements contributing to overall scholarly environment most conducive to establishing and maintaining the academic milieu are: Service on various committees at the various levels of the institution; participation in activities of professional societies through leadership and committee activities, participation in seminars, short courses, colloquia, and symposia for the benefit of the overall profession, the sciences, etc.; activities as a resource person in one's area of competence; publications not necessarily the result of research or teaching activities (This assumes that publications resulting from such activities would be evaluated under those headings); recruitment activities both for students and institutional staff; advising students in both academic and extracurricular activities; activities in promoting causes of benefit to the institution and its students, faculty, staff, and the community in which the institution is both locally and more generally; providing counsel, analysis, position papers, speeches, data, and other materials and assistance to college and institutional administration.
