Frequently Asked Questions
What is the electronic directory?
The electronic directory is your local telephone directory provided in a form you can use on your company intranet. It includes Residence, Business, and Government listings. It is provided free of charge to businesses participating in a directory renewal/reduction program.
Why create electronic directory pages when a printed version exists?
Phone books consume millions of trees each year. A recent study revealed that only 21% of phone books are being recycled. The rest end up in the local landfills around the cities where they are distributed each year. The electronic directory pages allow businesses to help in this effort to conserve and preserve the environment. Every user individually contributes to this effort.

Will this work within my browser, or do I have to install a separate application?
If your browser supports ActiveX components (i.e. Internet Explorer 3.0 or greater), then the electronic directory pages will run within your browser. However, if you use Netscape Navigator you will need to download and install a custom web phonebook client. The client acts as a highly efficient dedicated browser to obtain compressed and encrypted electronic page data from your intranet server. It allows the electronic pages to be presented providing a "look and feel" that you are used to with your paper book in a way that would not be possible with a strictly HTML browser based product.
How about Unix?
There are currently no plans for a Unix client, though users have reported that they have been able to run the Windows client under some of the PC emulators such as Wine.
