The
day was not Saturday and the
field was not home but the
game was a cracker and
Palmer shone and showed our
teeth aginst a strong Pearl
City team.
Palmer Dragons took the trip across enemy lines and headed to MuscaVegas to Carverville,to meet Pearl City Rugby Club, runners up to Mens D1 US Championship for 2008, on Monday 14th September.
The game was played under lights and was a spectacle worthy of every praise and rugby analogy out there. Two motivated sides lined up and smoked eachother trading blows in a tight contest.
Palmer dominated in the first half and kept ball possesion at a record all time high of 70% and snuffed out any opportunities Pearl City had as well as defending our line like champs and rushing Pearl City into a number of handling errors...
We won alot of lineouts and were competitive in the scrum and competed well but were sometimes shuvved off of ball and possesion at the breakdown but recovered well. Taking a leaf out of "Stealing Hands Hardy's" book Zac Korth stole ball around the fringes but we failed to offload and capitilise on these opportunities as well as not converting an intercept from Rusty Johnson and break from Jarod Selby (who was tripped), which would have put us up by 14 points.
We played the game and kept our discipline and were rewarded with 3 penalties all converted by Chad London with some classy kicking. Game flowed too and fro and was close and we went in to the break with pearl City in a lead of 12-9...
Shortly after second half we capitilised again off mistakes and London slotted too more kicks to put us up 15-12, with 25 mins to go till final whistle.
A foul play incident resulting in a yellow card for Pearl City struck us with a cruel blow as Matt Phinney our leader and captain was sidelined with a shoulder shoulder injury from a hit out of the air where his legs were taken out and he came crashing, all 7ft 9in, to the ground.
This caused a disruption in scrums and lineouts which culminated in Pearl City getting a lot of loose ball and our backline getting none. They loved the disjointed structure and ran everything back at us and we defended strong but there foreign backline from all over the world, ran in some soft tries from just sucking in our players and going through the phases. We conceded 4 tries in the last 15 mins.
Unlucky day at the office, boys played extremely well, but we dont do EXCUSES, we work harder for next week!!!
Final score Pearl City 42-15.
